Meet the Maker
Hi, my name is Stephanie and I hope you love Scents of the Valley as much as I do. Scents was truly born in the summer of 2012 but has come so far since then. In July of 2012 I was working full time as both a mother and for a company in Manhattan when I decided with what little free time I had to solve a problem for my mother.
My mother has sworn by goat milk soap for a long time. It had become difficult for her to find, and she could notice a difference in the softness of her skin, so I began searching for her. I visited many craft fairs and on the rare occasion that I found goat milk soap, it never seemed to live up to her expectations. I discovered this was due to inferior ingredients, and decided to fix this by learning to make a soap that was good enough for my mom.
I did months of experimenting and research to combine the perfect ingredients to craft a soap that is cleansing and soft and stood up to my mother’s rigorous standards. The resulting soap was a resounding success. So much so that my Mother shared the soap with her friends who liked and wanted to know if they could purchase more from me. I went from making the soap just for family and friends to making enough to sell in small quantities upon request. I was making soap with any free time I had at this point and started to branch out. If I could provide quality that was hard to find in soaps, why not lotions too?
By the summer of 2013 my little project had become a life of its own and I captured that through the creation of a company called Goat’s in a Coat (my original soap was wrapped in alpaca wool.) Soon after I had an offer to sell my soap in Soons Orchards. Business was booming. I was amazed and humbled by how many people enjoyed my soap as much as my mother. I continued to find stores to host my product and continued to make and develop new creations. In December of 2014 I was able to quit my job and take on the soap industry full time. As Goats in a Coat grew I began getting requests for products of quality like candles that didn’t necessarily include goat milk soap. In the summer of 2014, I opened my first store under the name Scents of the Valley to include all of my blossoming products, including the Goat’s in a Coat line.
